Communiqué: Tragic Loss of Two Dedicated Trackers in Upemba National Park

Lusinga, November 23, 2024 – The Upemba National Park (UNP) expresses its profound sadness and dismay at the tragic death of two of its trackers, who were abducted and tortured by Mai-Mai militia. Mbuya Musao Ambroise and Kishimba Kayemba Edmond were kidnapped from the village of Katondo, near the Mabwe substation (Bukama Territory, Haut-Lomami Province), during the night of November 18–19, 2024. Their lifeless bodies, brutally tortured and cowardly killed, were found four days later near the site of their abduction.

Recently, these two trackers had made invaluable contributions to the biomonitoring department, assisting in the location of elephants in the park’s northwest area in preparation for a collaring exercise. Mbuya Musao Ambroise, aged 46, and Kishimba Kayemba Edmond, aged 41, leave behind their wives and 13 and 7 children, respectively.

We vehemently denounce and condemn this heinous act, committed by enemies of conservation and development, who have once again taken the lives of two noble allies of nature preservation and the protection of the UNP and Congolese biodiversity.

On behalf of the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) and the UNP, we extend our sincere condolences to their families and loved ones. May their memory and unwavering commitment to conservation continue to inspire our efforts.
