DRC at 66: Playing our Part as a National Park

Today, the Democratic Republic of Congo commemorates the 66th anniversary of its independence. This June 30 marks a moment to reflect on a journey that has been as remarkable as it has been challenging. Over the past six decades, our nation has experienced periods of hope, resilience, hardship, and renewal. While much has been achieved, much remains to be done to unlock the immense potential of a country blessed with extraordinary people and unparalleled natural wealth.

The future of the Democratic Republic of Congo will not be defined solely by the resources beneath its soil or the forests that cover its landscapes. It will be shaped above all by the women and men who choose to build a stronger nation, guided by integrity, knowledge, innovation, and a shared commitment to the common good.

“Human capital remains our greatest asset, and investing in people is essential to transforming opportunity into lasting prosperity.”

Alongside this human potential lies another national treasure: our natural heritage. From vast forests and rivers to savannas, wetlands, and exceptional wildlife, the Democratic Republic of Congo possesses ecosystems of global importance. When managed responsibly, these natural resources can become powerful drivers of sustainable economic growth, climate resilience, and improved livelihoods for present and future generations. Conservation and development are not opposing ambitions – they are complementary pillars of a prosperous future. And this belief is at the heart of our work at Upemba National Park.

Our mission extends beyond restoring one of Africa's forgotten protected areas. We are working to restore a landscape where nature and people thrive together. Through the protection of biodiversity, strengthening ecological resilience, supporting local communities, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and creating opportunities linked to conservation, we aspire to make Upemba a green engine for local development.

We recognize that the path is not without challenges. Conservation in the Democratic Republic of Congo often unfolds in complex social, economic, and security contexts. Yet every hectare patrolled, every species protected, every community partnership strengthened, and every young person inspired demonstrates that long-term progress is possible through collaboration, perseverance, and shared responsibility.

As the nation celebrates 66 years of independence, we reaffirm our commitment to contributing to the vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Democratic Republic of Congo. As a national park, we are proud to play our part by safeguarding our natural heritage while helping build opportunities for the people who depend upon it.

The story of our country's future is still being written. Together, through the strength of our people and the responsible stewardship of our natural resources, we can ensure that the next chapters are defined by resilience, sustainability, and hope.

From all of us at Upemba National Park, we wish the Democratic Republic of Congo a meaningful Independence Day.

Happy Independence Day.
