International Nurses Day 2025: Celebrating the Vital Role of Nurses at Upemba National Park

Today, Monday, May 12, 2025, the world marks International Nurses Day (IND) under the theme: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies.” This observance honors the vital contributions of nurses in building healthy, resilient societies. This year’s theme emphasizes the crucial role a healthy nursing workforce plays in strengthening economies, improving health systems, and achieving better outcomes for communities worldwide.

At Upemba National Park, we proudly recognize the invaluable contributions of our nurses, who dedicate themselves to the well-being of our personnel, visitors, and neighboring communities. Clinics have long been a cornerstone of the infrastructure at each of our stations, supporting the park through countless challenges. Today, we are proud to count five dedicated nurses on duty across Upemba.

This morning, we spent time with one of them, Mr. Kiluba Fisher, to learn more about the experience of nursing at Upemba. Here’s what he shared:

At Upemba, we believe that health – both physical and mental – is essential to the life and functioning of every being. Our nurses are committed to providing mental, moral, and physical assistance. The ethical obligation to offer care at any time often means sleepless nights, as needs arise constantly and unpredictably in our context.
In line with this year’s global theme, 'Caring for Nurses for a Stronger Economy,' we, the nurses of Upemba National Park, extend our heartfelt thanks to the park authorities, our colleagues, and the surrounding communities for the trust they continue to place in us.
We also reaffirm our commitment to the highest standards of medical ethics: (1) Respect for human rights and the right to life; (2) Preservation of the dignity of all patients; (3) Delivery of integrated, compassionate care addressing physical, mental, and educational needs.
We invite everyone’s cooperation to help us fulfill our duty to the fullest. Together, let us continue to uphold the principles of morality, loyalty, and humanity.

Today and every day, we celebrate our nurses – the heart of our health efforts at Upemba – and recognize their indispensable role in supporting both the park and the broader communities we serve.
